20 Months: Darwin doesn’t care about the football

June 22, 2010

Darwin thinks its a bone

What-do-you-mean-we've-got-to-go-back-because-the-football's-on

Darwin’s been bright and bouncy this month. Our clever collar that we can beep her with if she’s doing something wrong seems to be ineffective when there’s a rabbit or deer in her sights. She even went into someone else’s house and stole a pair of socks (I later found out that she was goaded into this).

Anyway, the weather has been superb (unlike the football) and we have been out on many walks enjoying the greenery. I’ve needed to pop back into London a few times and am staggered at how unfriendly the place is…long live life in the country!

Week 60: Family Fun!

December 22, 2009

Darwin in front of the Christmas tree

Santa's Little Helper?

We had relatives to stay for a few days last week and we practically wore Darwin out. She loved the extra attention and had lots of different shoes to chew on. Darwin’s prowess on the football field also came to the fore as she defended with grit and determination and a lot of teeth (not so good for the ball). Jamie and Chris are very good at football, but Darwin could dispossess them within seconds, only trouble was that her distribution of the ball after a tackle left a little bit to be desired.

The ice on the heath had Darwin in pirouettes at times, but then the next day it would thaw and she would fall into the puddle she had previously skated across. All good fun, but perhaps not great for her legs, however, she didn’t seem to mind. She has decided that it is too cold for swimming now. No amount of coaxing could get her in when half the lake was frozen over, so I guess she does have some sense after all.

Christmas is almost upon us and Darwin is getting quite excited. No presents under our tree – we know they wouldn’t last 5 minutes…but not long to wait now. I need to stop TC from getting that last little thing. I think Darwin has tree presents and a pillow case to open in the morning!

Week 51: more long walks

Darwin with a stick

'I'm coming!'

More long walks. These are good for the soul and I’m de-stressing with every pace.

Darwin is much more attentive than I thought she could ever be and I’m now quite impressed with her recall and obedience of commands at a distance (when she is quite far away from us and we can see hazards nearby) we can get her to sit and lie down by hand signals alone.

Week 45: tired dog

Darwin head on paws

It's a dogs life

Darwin seems to come back from Dogs 2 Mogs absolutely exhausted. She was in for 4 days last week and when we pick her up in the evenings she has her food and is then dead to the world for the rest of the night.

We hired a big van this weekend to move all our big furniture out of the house and as many boxes as we could manage. It’s extraordinary how much rubbish one accumulates. We packed the van from top to bottom and then drove to TC’s brother’s house to temporarily store everything until we move into our new rented accommodation. Darwin lay at the bottom of the cab, her nose getting in the way every time we shifted gear.

We stayed overnight and walked in the forest the following morning. We had neglected to put the good dog collar on and we suffered because of it. Darwin found a pile of chicken bones that had been put out for the foxes and wolfed these down whilst evading capture.

Week 24: can’t stop diggin…

April 12, 2009

digging for treasure ..
We’ve been trying new toys with Darwin and playing different games with her, but she still seems to prefer her own space in the evening. We bought her a comfy dog pillow for the living room which she seems to like.

Week 15: Snow

February 8, 2009

bigger snow ball ..
Darwin was fascinated by the snow last week. She wanted to spend all day simply sitting in the stuff. There’s no better game that catching snowflakes as they fall to the floor – much easier than raindrops. We built a snowman and Darwin helped by jumping on it and biting it.
